Sanda (散打) or Sanshou (散手), literally: "free combat", is a style ofkick boxingChinese, and the sports and competitive modality ofKung Fu(chinese martial art), in its sports version orwushuin the "Combat" modality, made up of punching techniques (with the fist and leg), projection (derived from traditional Chinese wrestlingShuai Jiaoand the system of leversqin-na). It is these grasping and projection techniques that differentiate it from other forms ofkick boxingand other combat sports. Sanda tournaments are recognized by the International Federation ofwushuas one of the two modalities that make up this sport, along with the forms or routines (taolu).

 

Sanda "kung fu" was developed as a synthesis of traditional kung-fu techniques, more specifically tournaments.lei tai, but with rules to reduce the possibility of serious injury. Sanda places its emphasis on enhancing fighting ability in combat, rather than developing the ability to achieve elaborate forms.

For safety reasons, competition rules prohibit elbow strikes, dislocations to small joints, and strangulation. However, victory can be obtained by throwing the opponent out of the competition area.
