A little history
The lion dance is a form ofdancetraditional inchinese cultureand other countriesasianin which artists imitate the movements of aleón, where Kung Fu Choy Lee Fut schools participate every year, disguised as the representation of this animal, to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during theChinese New Yearand other traditional, cultural and religious Chinese festivals. It can also be performed on important occasions such as business opening events, special celebrations, or wedding ceremonies, or used to honor special guests from Chinese communities.
The Chinese lion dance is sometimes mistakenly known asdragon danceby most beginners. An easy way to tell the difference is that a lion is normally handled by just two dancers and has a tail, while a dragon is longer and is held at the ends by many people. The fundamental movements of the Chinese lion dance can be found inchinese martial arts.
There are two main forms of the Chinese lion dance, the northern lion and the southern lion. Both forms are commonly found in China, but throughout the world, especially in thesoutheast asia, the Southern Lion predominates, since it spread through the communities of thechinese diaspora, which are historically mostly of Chinese origin. Versions of the lion dance are also found inJapan,Korea,TibetandVietnam. Another form of lion dance exists inindonesian culture, but may be of a different tradition and may be referred to as a Singa Barong.
